History of the Ferry Service

The story of Trinidad and Tobago's inter-island ferry service traces back to 1901, when the Government of Trinidad and Tobago first contracted with the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company of Great Britain. In those early days, sea travel was the only means of transportation between the islands.

Our journey has been marked by continuous evolution and modernization:

1924
The government acquired its first vessel, the SS Belize, making weekly round trips to coastal communities
1930-1957
The SS Tobago and SS Trinidad served the islands for nearly three decades
1960s
A revolution in ferry service began with the introduction of roll-on/roll-off vessels, the Scarlet Ibis and Bird of Paradise
2005
The introduction of fast ferries "The Cat" and "The Lynx" transformed inter-island travel, reducing journey times to just 2½ hours
2006-Present
Continued fleet modernization with state-of-the-art vessels including the T&T Express, T&T Spirit, Galleons Passage, and APT James
